Impact of Cyber Intrusions on Gateway Casinos

On April 16, Gateway Casinos had to abruptly halt its operations following a successful ransomware attack on the company's network. The severity of the attack rendered the company incapable of performing its day-to-day operations, leading to the closure of gaming floors and leaving thousands of workers in uncertainty. Although the company resolved the issue by April 29 and started reopening its casinos, the repercussions of the attack were far from over.

Over a month later, it became apparent that the attack had likely resulted in the theft of confidential employee data. Gateway Casinos began offering free credit monitoring services to its employees only after this realization, inciting frustration and concern amongst its workforce. The fear of personal information being misused or sold on the dark web has led to a major uproar, with employees, represented by the Canadian trade union Unifor, expressing discontent over the company's delayed response.

Unifor spokesperson Greg Weaver has publicly criticized Gateway's handling of the situation, insisting that the company should have offered credit monitoring services to its employees immediately after the attack. According to Weaver, the uncertainty and potential misuse of personal information have left Gateway employees "extremely upset."

Gateway Casinos has been tight-lipped on whether they paid a ransom to restore their IT systems. The company states that it is collaborating with law enforcement, financial regulators, and expert advisors, yet the specifics about the attack and its resolution remain scant.

Technology expert Carmi Levy suggests that employees are often a significant reason for successful cyberattacks, with hackers exploiting their access through phishing emails. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the essential need for effective cybersecurity measures, regular IT systems checks, and comprehensive training for employees to identify and thwart potential cyber threats.
